FAQs

What are Sisterlocks™?

Sisterlocks™ are a trademarked hair locking technique created by Dr.JoAnn Cornwell in 1993. Sisterlocks™ are very small and uniform in size, created using a precise grid system.

How long does my hair have to be to get Sisterlocks™?

To get Sisterlocks™ you need 1 1/2 -2 inches of natural unprocessed hair. You don’t have to cut your hair if you have a perm. You just need 1 1/2 inches of natural hair to transition into Sisterlocks™.

Can I dye my hair before or after getting Sisterlocks™?

If you chose to dye your hair, you should do so BEFORE getting your Sisterlocks™ installed. Once you have Sisterlocks™ it’s recommended to wait until your locks are fully settled ( typically 6-12 months) before applying any more dye. The locking process can be interrupted by chemical treatments, and dye can make locks dry and brittle if not properly maintained.

What is the difference between Sisterlocks™ and Microlocs?

Sisterlocks™ and Microlocks are both small, interwoven Locs, but they have key differences in technique, structure, and maintenance.

Sisterlocks™ :Installed using a patented tool and a precise grid pattern by a trained consultant.

Microlocks: installed using various methods, including interlocking, two-strand twists, braids, or coils without a strict grid or standardized technique.

Differences:

Installation process, Grid Pattern, Size & Appearance, Certification&Cost, Maintenance & Retightening.

Will Sisterlocks™ break my hair since they are so small?

When properly installed and maintained, Sisterlocks™ should not damage your hair. In fact, they can promote healthy hair growth by minimizing the manipulation of your hair, reducing the likelihood of breakage.

How long does it take for Sisterlocks™ to “settle in?”

Sisterlocks™ typically take 6 months to a year to fully settle and mature, though this varies depending on your hair texture, density, and how well you follow the care guidelines.
